What is the difference between a GS1 US GTIN and the GTINs created with a GS1 Company Prefix?

The main difference between a GS1 US GTIN and a GTIN created with a GS1 Company Prefix lies in how they are generated and the scope of their use. For example: GS1 US GTIN is a single GTIN that you can obtain directly from GS1 US. The GTIN is automatically generated for you, and you receive a certificate of proof. While it is ideal for business that need a unique identifier for a small number of products, it cannot be used on regulated healthcare products or for generating coupons.

Alternatively, when you license a GS1 Company Prefix, you get a block of numbers that you can use to create multiple GTINs. The GS1 Company Prefix allows you to generate GTINs for as few as 10 unique products or as many as 100,000 unique products. What’s the difference between a UPC and a GTIN?

GTINs and UPCs are often confused as the same thing – but they are different. A GTIN is a number that identifies the product itself and the UPC is the barcode that carries the GTIN, allowing it to be scanned by a barcode reader like the ones at the checkout counter of a store or the distribution center of an online retailer. No. To properly track and price products, a new GTIN should be assigned for each product and variation of the product such as size, color, style, or package count. Additionally, GTINs are needed to identify higher levels of packaging such as cases and inner packs.
